Vilnius District Municipality reports that the number of people who have declared their place of residence in the district increased by 4.5 thousand in 2024, to a total of 118,460 at the beginning of the year. Among the elderships, the largest growth was seen in the Avižieniai eldership district, where 3,338 people declared their place of residence, bringing the population to 18,082. The second largest growth occurred in the Riešė eldership with an increase of 361 people (total population: 8,860), followed by the Zujūnai eldership, with an increase of 293 (total population: 9,475).
Commenting on the favourable demographic changes, the Mayor of Vilnius District, Robert Duchnevič, expressed his satisfaction that Vilnius District remains one of the fastest growing municipalities in Lithuania, but at the same time, according to him, the municipality must take responsibility for the provision of the necessary services.
"This consistent population growth shows that Vilnius District is an attractive place to live for both young families and those coming from other regions, including the capital. As a municipality, we need to ensure quality and accessible services for our residents – education, healthcare and other public services. We must also strengthen infrastructure development and improve road maintenance, water supply and public transport," stated R. Duchnevič.
The Mayor acknowledges that some of the residents register in Vilnius because of the better developed network of kindergartens and schools, as well as because it is more convenient for parents to take their children here when commuting to work in the capital. However, according to R. Duchnevič, it is crucial for those living in Vilnius District to officially declare their place of residence there, as this contributes to the municipal budget, allowing resources to be allocated toward achieving the aforementioned goals.
"Therefore, I invite everyone who has not yet declared their place of residence in Vilnius District but lives here to do so. Every declaration of residence is an investment in the future of our district, ensuring better conditions for both current and future generations,” emphasises R. Duchnevič.
It is noted that a year ago, the total number of declared residents in Vilnius District was 116.5 thousand – some of the Lithuanian citizens and foreigners who lived here in 2024 left Lithuania or relocated to other municipalities.
Birth Rate in the District: Positive, Yet Challenges Remain
In 2024, the Civil Registry Office in Vilnius District registered 1,034 births, of which 546 were boys and 488 were girls. There were also 18 pairs of twins and one set of triplets. A total of 218 birth records were made for children whose parents had declared their residence in other municipalities, and 32 birth records were for children born in Lithuania to Ukrainian and Belarusian citizens.
In comparison, the number of children born in Vilnius District in 2023 was slightly higher – 1 169. According to the Mayor of Vilnius District, this decline in births is a national trend that needs to be addressed at the national level.
“Even in Vilnius city, we observe this phenomenon. This is a clear indicator that the state must strengthen its family policy in order to create favourable conditions for families to raise children. This includes measures such as financial support for young families, flexible working conditions for parents, a properly developed system of education and care for children, as well as the promotion of the acquisition or rental of housing with more favourable conditions for the population," says Duchnevič.
