In order to address the shortage of public transport drivers in the district, the Vilnius District Municipal Council has approved a draft decision on the training of public transport drivers in the Vilnius District. The implementation of this initiative would ensure the training of qualified professionals and promote the development of public transport in Vilnius District.

According to the Mayor of Vilnius District Municipality, Robert Duchnevič, the shortage of drivers is a serious challenge in many municipalities, and Vilnius District is no exception.

"The shortage of public transport drivers is felt across Lithuania, so we, as a municipality, must provide attractive working conditions and strive to ensure the quality and accessibility of public transport services in our district. I hope that this decision of the Council will help us address the challenges we are facing," says R. Duchnevič.

The draft decision was submitted to the Council for consideration by Councillor Waldemar Urban, Elder of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance faction.

"With this project, we want to draw attention to the shortage of drivers in the bus fleet in Vilnius district and to propose a solution to attract new drivers. It is envisaged that each new employee would be compensated with around 6,000 euros from the municipal budget, with the obligation to work for the bus fleet for a certain period. The aim of this decision is to ensure a sufficient number of qualified staff, which is a prerequisite for the development of public transport services, new routes and their frequency. The Council is aware of the scale of the problem and is proposing a concrete solution," said Councillor W. Urban during the presentation of the draft decision.

The implementation of the decision should help ensure a sufficient number of public transport drivers, allowing for the expansion of transport routes and more frequent services in the Vilnius district. It is expected that this will significantly improve the accessibility of public transport to residents, making it more accessible to both the residents and visitors of the Vilnius district.

Those wishing to work as bus drivers for the Vilnius District Bus Fleet will receive comprehensive training. They will acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for working with different types of buses. The company will cover all costs related to the training, including health checks and exams at "Regitra". Upon successfully completing the training, participants will commit to working for the company for at least three years from the date of signing the employment contract.

The funds for the training of public transport drivers in the Vilnius District would come from the budget of the Vilnius District Municipality, with around 60,000 euros planned for 2025. The project would be implemented by the Vilnius District Bus Fleet.
