On 19-23 of May Gabriela Mickevič-Jara, Integration Coordinator of Vilnius District Municipality for Residents of Foreign Origin in Lithuania, and Ieva Jakubėnaitė, Deputy Chairperson of the Vilnius District Municipality Youth Council, together with the NGO ‘World Citizenship Academy’ participated in the ‘Citizenship Academy: building inclusive and diverse European societies through the civic participation of young migrants’ training course in the Spanish city of Valencia.

"Citizenship Academy: building inclusive and diverse European societies through the civic participation of young migrants is a joint initiative of four partners, World Citizenship Academy (Lithuania), Jovesolides (Spain), COPE (Italy) and VogalOrizontal (Portugal), which aims to empower young people of foreign origin to become more involved in the social and civic life of their local communities and countries.

"This initiative is a small step towards a bigger goal, which aims to show young migrants and people of foreign youth that their voices matter and must be heard. These are the people who live, study, develop their lives in Lithuania – in this way they contribute not only to the well-being of the country today, but also to its future," Gabriela Mickevič-Jara, Coordinator of the Integration of Lithuanians of Foreign Origin, said about the project.

The project will enable 40 young people of foreign origin with residence permits in Lithuania to participate in a 40-hour course, which will introduce them to the historical context of Lithuania and encourage greater involvement in the local community, leadership and activism. The aim of this project is to empower migrant youth, promote activism and foster democratic values of the European Union.

"The School of Citizenship is a significant initiative in Vilnius District, which aims to help young people of foreign origin to integrate, to learn more about Lithuanian culture, history, values and civil rights, to promote their involvement in local communities and to encourage their active participation in community activities," says Ieva Jakubėnaitė, Deputy Chairperson of the Youth Council of the Vilnius District Municipality.

During a visit to Valencia, where the partner organisation Jovesolides operates, the achievements of the programme, now in its sixth year, were observed. As each partner's programme is tailored to the specificities and needs of each country, the meetings focused on the sequence of work and the main highlights, the content of the training, the common issues and the main differences between the partner countries, the common European Union policy on migrants, and the participation in several of the training sessions organised by Jovesolides, which have been attended by young people from Equatorial Guinea, Colombia, Guyana, Palestine, Morocco, Nigeria, Argentina, Peru and other countries.
